Physicians have an obligation to act as expert witnesses on behalf of the plantiff or defendant. In our opinion, expert analysis of wound care related legal cases should only be rendered by wound specialists. However, wound care is an emerging specialty. The number of physicians dedicated to the full time practice of wound care is limited. Moreover, there are even fewer wound specialists who, like Dr. Thomas E. Serena MD FACS, are actively involved in research into the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds. For this reason, Dr. Serena has made himself available for consultation as an expert witness. His goal is to ensure that information provided in a court of law is evidence-based and reflects the current standard of care in the field. Dr Serena is a member of the Wound Healing Society’s panel which authored the recently published national guidelines for the treatment of chronic wounds.
